In-text Citation Checkpoint

Q In-Text Citation Checkpoint Your name: Directions: Please provide a paragraph from your ENG 111 essay. Please make sure that your paragraph includes an in-text citation. Incorporating Sources There are three different options you can use when incorporating outside information into your own work: direct citation, paraphrase, and summary. Direct Quote – A direct citation is when you use the author’s exact words in your own work. This is best for short, perfectly worded quotes. Paraphrase – A paraphrase is when you use another author’s idea but present it in your own words. The benefit of this option is that your own voice is consistent. Summary – A summary is when you shorten another author’s idea and present it in your own words. This is best for long ideas that may otherwise distract the reader from your own thoughts as presented in your paper. 1. Please share your paragraph below. 2. Did you use a direct quote, paraphrase, or summary? 3. Did you include an in-text citation with the author’s last name and the page number on which you found the information? Prison overcrowding is a key concern in the criminal justice system in many states; however, maintaining private prisons as an alternative to public prisons is not the answer. Many states have started collaborating with privately functioned correctional organizations to manage the increasing prison population to accommodate inmates. Studies by the Bureau of Justice Statistics show that the number of inmates in private prisons has risen from 1,600 in 2009 to 116,000 prisoners in 2019 (Marko 54). Regardless of the private jails reducing overcrowding in public prisons, many of the private prisons have been linked with the abuse of the prisoners, especially the mentally ill, cases of violence, and violation of prisoners' rights; hence should be phased out as an alternative of public prisons.
